The umbrella term for any second dwelling unit in a home, most often in the basement. To rent it legally in Calgary, it must be built or upgraded to code and registered.

An existing older suite upgraded to current code: egress, fire separation, interconnected alarms, ventilation, then inspected and registered. This is how illegal suites become legal.

A finished family basement with a bar or kitchenette but no separate dwelling: no private entrance or suite registration needed. Perfect for entertaining, not rentable as a suite.
A legal suite (new build) or legalized suite (upgraded existing). Both end registered with the City of Calgary and can be rented legally.
Yes, if planned that way: we can rough in services and egress now so a future entrance and kitchen upgrade completes the suite.
